
Ways of applying digital number plate.
The digital number plates have finally been rolled out and the application will be officially opened from October 1, 2022. However, any new or imported vehicles now and onwards will be registered using the new number plate.
The new digital plates have been rolled out in compliance with the Traffic Act, 2016 and The National Transport and Safety Authority is the only government body mandated to issue the new digital number plate.
There are two ways to apply for change of new generation number plate that is online or manually.
Online application via TIMS
- Subscribe to receive SMS – send NTSA to 22847
- Log on to The National Transport and Safety Authority (www.ntsa.go.ke)
- Click on the TIMS logo or link (https://tims.ntsa.go.ke/login_csp.jsp)
- Go to apply reflective number plate
- Select the type of vehicle that needs a new plate from the choices provided(There is a list in case you have more than one(1) vehicle.
- Indicate the plate type that is normal or preferred number plate.
- Indicate person to pick the number plate and the point of collection
- Pay Sh3,000 application fee or ksh 30,000 for Preferred plates. Motorcycle plates cost is Sh1,500. The payment can be done via M-pesa or VISA card. The system will confirm receipt of the payment thereby completing the application process.
- NTSA will alert you via text message when plate will be ready for collection.

Manual application
- Acquire application form from any NTSA office across the country.
- Indicate vehicle particulars, type of plates needed
- Deliver duly filled form to NTSA offices
- Make payment Ksh3,000 or ksh 30,000 for preferred number plate through the M-pesa or Visa Card
- Wait for a text notification to pick up your plates
The plates color for the front and back of the vehicle despite having aesthetically pleasing fonts and designs will be different from each other.
